about

From the playing of the South Street Trio (1927, Victor). Arranged by Jim Miller. This piece, recorded by the South Street Trio (African-American duo Bobby Leecan & Robert Cooksey, dates unknown), highlights the rag form, with a variety of strains, variations, and rhythms that was the rage in the early 1900s. This arrangement by mandocellist Jim Miller, who has long taught students to play variety of instruments in the Bluegrass, Old Time and Roots Music Studies program, imagines how this piece might have sounded if a period group back then had gotten their hands on it.
